Died : Crèteil (Paris) 19 February 2001 Charles Trenet, the last of the legendary French chanson stars, celebrated an incredible sixty years in the music business - Trenet will inevitably go down in music history as the man who wrote the unforgettable “The Sea” (La Mer). (Trenet claimed to have penned the song in just twenty minutes whilst on a train journey between Narbonne and Carcassonne!) “La Mer”, which has been translated into dozens of different languages and rocketed to the top of charts all around the world, has undoubtedly become one of the most famous French songs of all time - while its author has become a veritable legend!
